A morning in Currumbin

Currumbin Creek does something to the pace of a day. It's calmer than the surf beaches, flatter, greener around the edges, the kind of water you paddle across rather than fight. Here's how to spend a morning on it, with the eating sorted.

Start with breakfast on the sand

Tarte Beach House sits right on Currumbin Creek, and the Cafe is down on the sand. Walk straight in, no booking needed, open from 6:30am every day. On the Gold Coast in winter that means you can be there for the good light.

Order a proper breakfast or keep it light, with a coffee from our house blend, roasted just for us by Parallel Roasters. If the morning has a chill in it, the Parisian Hot Chocolate with its torched marshmallow is the move. Bringing the dog? The Cafe's on the sand and dog-friendly, so they're welcome at your feet while you eat.

Then get on the creek

The creek is the reason to linger. It's calm, protected water, ideal for a stand-up paddleboard even if you've never done it before. SUP hire is available right here at the Beach House, so you can roll straight from breakfast onto the water without packing a thing. (Check current hire times before you set out.)

Mid-winter is also whale season off the southern Gold Coast. The paddle is quiet, the air is clear, and you've got the whole morning ahead of you.

Stay on for an early lunch

The thing about Currumbin is that you don't have to rush off. Dry off and move up off the sand. The restaurant and the Tea Garden beside it take bookings for a sit-down lunch, and walk-ins are always welcome too. This is where the kitchen stretches out, grilled Queensland barramundi, a wagyu steak and frites, a bay lobster roll. The Hideout sits above it all, looking out over the creek through the branches of a 100-year-old fig tree, the spot for a long lunch or a private function for a bigger group. If high tea is more the mood, the [Tea Garden] is right there. It's a daytime spot and the doors close mid-afternoon, so make a morning and an early lunch of it.

And if you started your day at our Burleigh bakery instead, with a pastry and a coffee at 1748 Gold Coast Highway, Currumbin is a ten-minute drive south. Bakery in the morning, creek at lunch makes a genuinely good Saturday.
